Gay couples have anal sex for the same reason why some heterosexual couples do: It’s an option.
The fact that the male gender isn’t equipped with a vagina is obviously a contributing factor to anal sex being a more common occurrence when two males get hot and bothered.
There really aren’t very many options on the human physiology.
